Project Update!

Hello All!

We thought it was time for an update on Lili's project. For those who don't know she is working on creating a series of heritage items meant to represnt the future of family legacy in an increasingly digital world. So far this has two parts, a quilt & a set of jewelery. All utilizing some digital mapping she did earlier this year.

So first things first... the quilt...

With no access to an embriodery machine she is doing it all by hand, this means hours each day sitting with needle in hand and most recently, 5 hours of Foyle's War on Netflix.

Each flower represents a member of her family on her father's side... so far grandma & Grandpa done!

4 more to go... sheesh

Next up was the jewelery. So far she has made templates meant to be used on the laser cutting machine in the university's prototyping lab. for each part of the piece you have to make a schematic like this one!

Once you tell the computer what the machine should cut out, etch or burn you press go and wait... Today she was using cardboard to see how the finished necklace would look, using cardboard allows you to see and decide on any changes without wasting any more expensive materials.

So we watched it go about it's complicated business (Lili can never make a simple design apparently).

And the prototype came out pretty good! There are some stylistic changes to be made but nothing too major. Hopefully the final rendition will be made soon.

This one represents Lili's cousin Kelley's digital interaction on facebook (in cardboard...) fun huh??

Next up was a product test. When the final jewelery is created Lili wants to make it out of acrylic in order to mimic bakelite. So she tried printing one of her maps (her cousin Allison's) on blue acrylic to see how the plastic would fair with the complicated pattern....

It faired remarkably well, next stop final pieces! Stay tuned!

Back to the needle and thread...

More soon!
